Playa Blanca is under an hour from Cartagena by bus. We took the shuttle bus from Mamallena hostel in Gestemani. This was a straight-forward way to get there and includes an open return, meaning you can come back whenever you like.

As you arrive at Playa Blanca you immediately get a sign of what is to come; the local sellers, bar owners etc come up to meet the bus and hang on to a specific customer, therefore claiming you as theirs. They will follow you down to the beach to make sure that if you want a sunbed, beer, ice cream that you buy it from them. This is fine because you can always politely say no but I would rather just make my own way down. Although, since I have now done more travel in South America I should say; at least they are making an honest living!

The beach was PACKED. It is hard to find an area to sit if you don’t want to pay out for beds or beers. Most of the available spaces are taken up with plastic chairs, but we did manage to squeeze in between some bars, just make sure you turn right and walk quite a way along! This is also where the more chilled bars are, further along the beach.

We went in March and my gosh it was hot. I love sunbathing but this was extreme; the sand was on fire, I even had to cover up and take breaks! But it is beautiful. It’s really like being on the nicest Carribbean beach; there is warm water and… wow. Now you can appreciate why all these people are here!

I had read so many times that staying over was the best way to visit Playa Blanca. We ignored this advice because we were short of time but I tell you now; THE BEST WAY TO VISIT PLAYA BLANCA IS TO STAY OVERNIGHT! After 3pm, there will be barely anyone there and you can enjoy paradise in peace. Even before that time you will have a base to leave you belongings, plus the hostels all have designated areas on the beach for you to chill at.

So, overall, this place is beautiful but stay over to appreciate it without hundreds of others and for a much calmer experience!
